On the weekend of May 31 and June 1, the Archdiocese of Port of Spain will have its annual special collection at all Masses across the Archdiocese in observance of the Feast of the Ascension.
This collection plays a vital role in funding the local mission of the Church, particularly through the work of key commissions that minister to the faithful at every stage of life.
Proceeds from the collection support commissions such as Family Life, Youth, Catechetical, Evangelisation, and Liturgical, each of which plays a unique role in strengthening the Church’s presence in homes, parishes, and communities.
Joanne Miller, Chancellor of the Archdiocese, emphasised the significance of the appeal: “This annual collection is about sustaining our Church’s pastoral mission. These commissions support our parish Churches in helping our people to become spiritually grounded in their everyday lives, preparing couples for marriage, forming young Catholics, and deepening faith through liturgy and evangelisation.”
In a world where families face mounting challenges and people are searching for direction and belonging, these ministries act as beacons of light and accompaniment.
The Archdiocesan Family Life Commission (AFLC), for example, is devoted to nurturing faith-centred relationships and supporting families through spiritual formation, counselling, and outreach programmes.
Tricia Syms, Episcopal Delegate for the AFLC, noted:
“The mission of the Family Life Commission is simple but profound. We serve families, one family at a time. The support we receive through this collection ensures that we can continue to walk with families in all seasons of life, offering formation, healing, and the message of Christ’s love.”
Over the past year, the commissions have launched youth development programmes, engaged in marriage and parenting support, and helped coordinate catechetical formation through parishes.
Additionally, they have supported initiatives that promote vibrant liturgical celebrations and deeper evangelisation.
This collection on the Feast of the Ascension gives every Catholic the opportunity to participate in the mission of the Church, ensuring that these ministries remain active, effective, and responsive to the needs of the people they serve.
Parishioners are encouraged to give generously at Mass on Ascension Sunday, and those who are unable to attend in person may contribute online.
See ‘Ways to Give’ and please be sure to state Ascension Sunday in the description for online transactions.
