“Whoever does not love me does not keep my words.”
John 14:21-26
In today’s scripture, Jesus teaches that obedience is the fruit of love. When you obey someone, it means that you love the person enough to trust them. To obey is also to do as you are asked and not do as you want. It is surrendering your will to the will of the other. In this passage, love and obedience are powerful themes.
Our defining characteristic as Christ’s disciples is love. We know that all our sacrifices are meaningless if we do not have love. In any relationship, love itself without obedience amounts to nothing. Love demands a response, and we need to show our love for God by doing as he says. Love is an action word! In turn we will get more love from God himself.
Jesus knew that we cannot do these things without the help of the Holy Spirit-the love of Father and Son poured into our hearts – which leads us to all truth. This is the blessing that will come when we follow and obey.
