“And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for such sacrifices God is pleased” (Heb 13:16).
During the solemn Lenten season, the pupils of Chickland RC Primary School engaged in a heartwarming activity of sacrifice that fostered a spirit of generosity and community within the school’s walls.
While they embraced the Lenten tradition of almsgiving, the pupils participated in a daily donation initiative that saw them enthusiastically contribute towards the common goal of supporting a member of the school community in need.
“Each of you must give as you decided in your heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Cor 9:7).
Each morning throughout Lent, a simple jar visited every classroom, and pupils were encouraged to donate whatever they wished, whether it was a contribution from their spending money or spare change.
The response was overwhelming, and the accumulated funds were then used to purchase essential items and treats, which were packaged into a bountiful hamper. The recipient of the hamper, whose identity was kept confidential, was selected via a process that ensured the receiver was a person truly in need.
“It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). This Lenten almsgiving activity was not just about collecting money. In fact, it was a profound and significant lesson in compassion, empathy and being each other’s keeper.
The pupils’ daily act of giving, regardless of how small, fostered a sense of belonging and unity within the school community. It also demonstrated the impact positive collective action can have and revealed the power of generosity in action.
