“…How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”
John 10:22-30
Come on, Jesus, the suspense is killing us! I can empathize with the Jews in this passage, especially during periods of trial when I struggle to discern what God is calling me to do. My mother also tells us that sometimes God keeps His cards close to His chest, so we should trust He’s not holding only ‘bush’ (all-fours analogy).
However, I think it’s in our nature to want to see things ‘plainly’ – Is this the right career, relationship, ministry? I am guessing Eve also wanted to see things plainly when she decided to eat the forbidden fruit. The funny thing is, if we truly had all the answers, we wouldn’t be open to listen for God’s voice and follow Him (v27). In verse 28, Jesus states ‘plainly’ God’s desire for us – “they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.” So even if we cannot see it ’plainly’ He is working.
Lord, help us to trust Your heart even when we cannot trace Your hand. Amen.
