Wednesday May 7th: I am the bread of life

‘He who comes to me will never be hungry; he who believes in me will never thirst.’

John 6: 35 – 40

When the apostles asked Jesus for that bread, which he said was different from what Moses gave the Israelites in the desert, Jesus said these words that are most important for us: ‘I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never be hungry; he who believes in me will never thirst.’

Then, at the Last Supper, he introduces the greatest mystery of the Church when he gives the bread and wine as his Body and Blood and tells the apostles, in the synoptic gospels, to do this in memorial of him. The Jews did not understand this and wondered how a man could give them his flesh to eat.

This is difficult to understand as it is a mystery and thus, we need to have faith and believe as Jesus himself says. ‘Whoever sees the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life.’

Faith, therefore, is all-important if we want eternal life.
