St. Joseph the Worker.
Joseph’s honour, prayerfulness and obedience to God made him a worthy example and inspiration for fathers in particular and for men in general.
Matthew 13:54-58
There are only two feast days dedicated to St. Joseph in the liturgical calendar. The first is March 19th and the second is May 1st. The Gospels speak of him in the infancy narratives as honourable, prayerful, listening to God and caring of Mary and the child Jesus. Today’s Gospel mentions him as a carpenter, which is a fitting description since we honour Joseph today under the title of ‘Worker’.
As most children do, Jesus reflected the teachings and influence of Joseph, his father. So, if we accept that Jesus was dedicated and faithful, we can also accept that Joseph was that way since Jesus would have lived what he saw at home, in his own parents.
Joseph’s honour, prayerfulness and obedience to God made him a worthy example and inspiration for fathers in particular and for men in general. Any father and any man would be proud to stand as tall as holy tradition makes Joseph out to be.
