“And though the light has come into the world people have preferred darkness to the light because their deeds were evil.”
John 3: 16-21
Many may remember the late Archbishop Anthony Pantin saying to confirmands, “If a young boy and girl choose to go outside in the dark, they ent gone there to say the rosary.” In today’s Gospel passage Jesus’ reference to what happens in the light as opposed to what happens undercover of darkness brings that admonition to mind.
Jesus berates his followers for making darkness a preferred option, masking evil intent and action. Such is an open rejection of the Son, the Light of the World, whom the Father, out of His infinite love, has sent not to judge but save mankind.
In this age of relativism, works of darkness can easily be justified depending on our stance on political or social issues or even personal inclinations, such as It is all about me or if it feels good do it. However, whether wrongdoing is deliberate or occurs because of our subscribing to a view which we misguidedly think is acceptable, there is need for deep introspection and transformation.
Lord Jesus, help us to choose you and walk in the light.
