Sunday April 27th: The Face of Mercy

“They were filled with joy at seeing the Lord, and he said to them, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father sent me so am I sending you.’”

John 20:19-31

On this Mercy Sunday, let us ask:
What does mercy look like?
How do we face each other after a betrayal?
What is the quality of presence we bring to those who have betrayed us?
Today’s Gospel tells us…
After the Judas kiss of betrayal
After Peters sword wielding
After the disciples’ fleeing
After Pilates’ sentencing
After Peter’s three- fold denial
After the journey to Calvary
After the Crucifixion and Death
After the Burial
After the women discover the empty tomb
After the disciples encounter the angels
After Mary Magdalene met Jesus
After all this…
Jesus, scarred and resurrected…fully human and fully alive… invites his disciples to share in the glory of God…that is, to move beyond our erring to forgive those who err against us.
On this Mercy Sunday, we who are sent to make disciples of all nations, must love as Jesus loved, continuously asking ourselves…Is our presence transformative? Does it turn fear to peace? Sorrow to joy? Doubt to faith? Do others experience being ‘mercied’ by us?
