Friday April 25th: Recognising His Presence

“It is the Lord!”

John 21: 1 – 14

Today’s Gospel takes us to the Sea of Galilee, where the disciples are despondent by Jesus’ passion and death. And as though empty, they go back fishing. They return to something familiar — casting their nets into the sea as they did before Jesus called them. But they catch nothing.

This moment speaks to us as well. After the great celebrations of faith, we can easily slip back into routine, to feel like nothing has changed. Sadness and emptiness are overwhelming experiences. They can devastate.

At dawn, Jesus stands on the shore, though they do not recognize Him at first. He directs them to a great catch of fish. At that moment, John recognizes Him: “It is the Lord!” At that moment they recognise Him and life returns.

Jesus will forever stand in our midst to call us and direct us. But if we are too focused on our own struggles, we might miss Him. Jesus never gives up on us. He calls us again and again.
