“Let us be bearers of good news”
Matthew 28:8-15
It is Resurrection Day. The tomb is empty, the stone rolled away. Jesus is not there. Alleluia!
Every character in the Gospel today who encountered the empty tomb has a story to tell and instructions to carry out.
The women, ‘filled with awe and great joy’ or another translation, ‘fearful but overjoyed,’ run to tell the disciples what they have seen. They interpreted emptiness positively. Their story is one of hope. Along the way they encounter Jesus who gives them a message for themselves, “Do not be afraid,” and for his disciples – “Tell them go to Galilee; they will see me there.” This is Good News!
The guards however, sharing the story of the empty tomb with the chief priests, are instructed: “Tell everyone the body was stolen.” They have no hope to share. No one encounters the Risen Christ with their account.
What about us? Are we bearers of good news? May we be a reflection of the Resurrection in the lives of others this Easter and always.
