“Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair.”
John 12:1-11
In today’s Gospel, we encounter the stingy and dishonest Judas Iscariot, who criticized Mary for “wasting” expensive perfume on Jesus’s feet. It made me think of homes I visited as a child, where one-half was meticulously arranged, and you dared not touch anything. Then there were the fancy dishes in the hutch, which only came out to be cleaned at Christmas.
What I love about Mary is how she recognized the importance of showing love and appreciation to those she valued. After all, Jesus had just raised her brother from the dead—surely, He deserved the best.
Are we waiting for the perfect moment to express our love and gratitude to the people in our lives? I’m not just talking about family, but also the people who make our daily routines easier—like the taxi or maxi driver who takes us where we need to go, or the priest who is always available to administer the Sacraments.
What are we waiting for?
Lord, help us to value what You value. Amen.
