Thursday April 10th: Missing the Point

So, the Jews said to Jesus, “Who do you make yourself out to be?”

John 8: 51-59

It can be very sad, or otherwise, frustrating, when listeners keep missing the real meaning of what is being said to them. This is exactly the situation with the Jews and Jesus as He explains to them about who He is. They fail miserably to understand the true meaning of His words, despite His patience with them.

In their arrogance, they challenge Jesus and question vehemently, everything that He says to them. Their ears and their hearts are closed to the true meaning of His words. Given the hardness of their hearts, they fail to recognise Him. They stone Him and send Him away so that they can pursue their own lives. Do we recognise ourselves in these Jews? How well do they reflect our own selves, either individually or collectively?

Jesus, give us the grace to know You and to recognise You. May we never send You away, but instead warmly welcome Your presence in and among us.
Amen.
