Sacramental Marriage Building weekend in Tortuga

“These sessions were really an eye opener for me, and I am going to take everything learnt and practice what was given… These were real life couples sharing their lives with us. We liked that.”

These were some sentiments expressed by the couples on Saturday, February 15 and Sunday 16 as the Sacramental Marriage Building (SMB) team of the Archdiocesan Family Life Commission (AFLC) kicked off the year with a spirit-filled weekend workshop in the parish of Our Lady of Montserrat, Tortuga. It was held at the request of parish priest Fr Shijomon Abraham Zacharias MSFS and the parish’s Family Life Unit.

Over the two days, 13-plus couples (married and unmarried) from as far as Point Fortin, Sangre Grande and various other corners of Trinidad, gathered in the Tortuga Community Centre to participate in and facilitate the workshop.

The first day began with a pilgrimage to the sacred site where couples were able to experience being in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament and receive the Sacrament of Confession if they desired.

Before the end of the first day, participants were already eager to find out the answer to the popular question “What’s next?” By the end of the weekend, couples went away with a greater understanding of themselves and their spouse, marriage as a sacrament, the Natural Cycle of Relationships, and structured communication tools to strengthen their relationships.

As for “What’s next?”, the SMB team will continue working with couples to host accompaniment sessions for married couples.
