Lent is a time to renew love through prayer, placing God first in our lives.
Mark 12:28-34
A scribe asks Jesus, “Which is the first of all the commandments?” Jesus summarizes the Law with two: love God and love your neighbour. The first commandment, from the Shema, calls us to love God completely —with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. Lent is a time to renew this love through prayer, placing God first in our lives. Ask ourselves – Have we let other things take His place?
The second commandment follows naturally: love your neighbour as yourself. True love for God overflows into love for others, which requires humility, patience, and forgiveness. This Lent, examine, with sincerity, how we love others.
The scribe affirms that love is greater than rituals, echoing Lent’s call to fasting, prayer, and almsgiving as means to grow in love. Jesus tells him, “You are not far from the Kingdom of God.” Lent is our journey toward this Kingdom, where love transforms our hearts and lives. Let us live these greatest commandments fully, drawing closer to God and His Kingdom.
