Why can’t you hear God’s voice?

By Daniel Francis

I typically don’t hear God’s voice that often. I know they say that God speaks to us in different ways: through other people, through divine intervention, etc. Yet when God does speak to me, it’s so loud and clear that I cannot dispute what He wants me to do, no matter how difficult I think it may be.

I have heard similar feedback from others who experience the same. I think back to the last time I heard God loud and clear to see what was different about that time versus other times when I could not hear His voice, and I think I have figured something out.

The last time God spoke to me was Ash Wednesday, prompting me to start my journey of forgiveness, which I have mentioned in earlier articles. I remember at that moment, I did not even go to God looking for an answer to this path; I simply wanted to know what I should give up for Lent. However, I was completely open to whatever He had planned for me. It seems He took that opportunity of openness to add a little extra journey in there.

Comparing this experience to other times when I asked, sometimes even begged, God for guidance and heard nothing, I noticed a striking difference. In those moments when I could not hear God, I had already decided what I wanted to hear Him say.

It seems so obvious now, but it’s hard to hear God’s voice when you’ve already decided what you want to hear Him say. Yet this is what we sometimes do. We come to God with our hopes of what we want, or we have already decided that this is what we will do and hope for His blessing. What would happen if we went to Him with a more open mind?

Thinking about openness, my mind could not help but run on the idea of manifestation. My generation is big on talking your success or the things you want into existence. You speak of them as though they will 100 per cent happen. By doing this, you trick your mind into believing that you already have what you are working towards. You are almost attracting it to yourself by doing this. But I wonder where manifestation and God’s voice intersect. I wonder this because if we are going to God with preconceived notions of what we want or have already chosen our path, and it ends up blocking God’s voice, how do we remedy this?

The answer seems to lie in the formation of what we want in life. If we create these plans in the absence of God, we will find that they will be devoid of God’s blessing.

If we include God in our planning and enter into those initial ideas with a level of openness to where He wants to lead us, I believe we will not only hear His voice through this process, but we will be better positioned to make these ideas a reality. This can be as simple as praying for His guidance before making your plans but also praying with a level of openness to where He may want to lead you.

Consider this the next time you are making plans for your future, or you believe that you are not hearing God’s voice. What He has in store for you may be difficult, but what could be more difficult than trying to attain something that God has not set out for you to attain?

Enter a position of complete openness and don’t lead with what you want to happen. Truly listen.
