Cathedral/Sacred Heart community honours sick, elderly

On Sunday, March 16, during the 9 a.m. Mass, we honoured the Sick and the Elderly as part of our Jubilee celebrations with prayer and anointing. Cathedral Administrator and Vicar General, Fr Martin Sirju, presided and Fr Emmanuel Dafe concelebrated.

In part of his homily, Fr Sirju expressed that we must care for the elderly and not engage in what Pope Francis calls the “throwaway culture” where the elderly are told to “park aside”. He spoke of the need to care for the sick and the vulnerable in our society.

Afterwards, the elderly and sick were anointed followed by prayers and later a blessing. Among those present was Angela Murray who celebrated her 100th birthday last November.

A care package and a meal were presented to those who attended. Members of the Geriatric Society of Trinidad and Tobago (GSTT) provided health checks with the help of two doctors, a physiotherapist and four volunteers.

Fr Sirju thanked the Parish Jubilee Committee, the Hospitality Ministry, GSTT, donors and all those who made this day possible.

Let us always honour and respect our elders, treasure their wisdom and experience, and care for them and the vulnerable in our midst.
