The Annunciation
Mary said, “I am the handmaid of the Lord.”
Luke 1:26 -38
“Let what you have said be done unto me.” Reflect on Mary’s words and disposition: A handmaid is one who takes orders, who obeys, who is humble and trusting. Whom does she trust? She trusts in God.
Who sent the message to her? How does she discern that this is a message from God? She listened attentively to the words of the angel Gabriel.
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you.” This is not an evil spirit.
Her son will be “Holy” and “great,” “Son of the Most High,” “Son of God.” His name will be “Jesus”.
Furthermore, God has performed a miracle for her elderly cousin. She became pregnant after many years of being called “barren”/ “having no children” and married for a long time.
Was Mary prepared to have a baby in a stable, a place for animals? Was she prepared to migrate to Egypt or to see her innocent son nailed to a cross?
Do we trust God as Mary did?
