Thursday March 20th: How To Give Away Eternal Glory

“We receive in the after world what we have worked for in this one.”

Luke 16:19-31

“This world and the world to come are two enemies. We cannot therefore be friends of both; but we must decide which we will forsake and which we will enjoy.” St. Clement I
The old people have a saying: “God doh sleep, and he doh wear pyjamas.” This wisdom acknowledges God as a God of justice who will address all the unfairness that we encounter, if not now, then definitely in the afterlife. But it is a sobering thing to realise that we ourselves, by our action, or inaction, choose our eternal life. We receive in the after world, what we have worked for in this one.
The story of Lazarus and the Rich Man shows us this quite clearly. Lazarus, poor and suffering in his short earthly life, received heavenly consolation for all eternity. The rich man, on the other hand, contented, self-absorbed and indifferent to the suffering of others, received Lazarus’ earthly sentence for his eternity. May God preserve us from throwing away our own eternal glory.
