Learning little by little to make Jesus’ practices our own.
Matthew 23:1-12
Jesus is always teaching. A teacher par excellence. A model leader. As we journey to being a synodal church we strive to be a humble church that listens deeply to the Holy Spirit speaking in others, all the baptized, clergy and laity alike, especially the outcasts and marginalized.
Jesus is teaching those who have authority, lay and clergy, parents, educators, doctors, lawyers, supervisors, those we listen to because of their expertise, how to practice authority. Pope Francis in the final of document of the Synod (§ 51) exhorts us, “Look to the Gospels to outline for us the journey of conversion…learning little by little to make Jesus’ practices our own.”
Jesus’ leadership is the attitude of a servant; “for servants shape their actions according to the master’s will.” Living according to God’s word means living as a servant. (The greatest among you will be your servant.) “Real authority is a form of service, not a way of control or domination or a claim to special privileges.” Jesus shows us a master whose expectations are high, but they are guided first and foremost by mercy.
