Friday March 14th: The spirit, not the letter of the law!

Lent invites us to examine not only our actions but also our hearts.

Matthew 5:20-26

In today’s gospel, Jesus challenges His disciples: “If your virtue goes no deeper than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven.”

The scribes and Pharisees often focused on the letter of the Law, ignoring its spirit. Jesus asks disciples to do better: work for interior transformation and depth. Lent invites us to examine not only our actions but also our hearts.

Jesus warns against anger, which poisons relationships and distances us from God. Resentment and grudges, even when hidden, breed division and are incompatible with Kingdom living. He urges reconciliation over worship, teaching us to seek and extend forgiveness before approaching the altar.

This call mirrors Christ’s work on the Cross, reconciling us to the Father. During Lent, we are reminded to act: pray for the grace to forgive, take steps to heal relationships, and participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

By embracing love, mercy, and reconciliation, we embody true discipleship, preparing our hearts to celebrate Easter’s ultimate triumph of reconciliation through the Cross.
