Sunday March 9th: Not Just bread

“Man does not live by bread alone.”

Luke 4:1-13

Man does not live by bread alone. Filled with the Holy Spirit, man approaches bread with reverence. It is the way he holds the bread in his hand and the particular movement to put the bread into his mouth with an intent and a purposeful gesture. These actions with his sacred hands, uplifted to his sacred mouth, accompanied by a gesture of thanksgiving and declared willingness to share with the hungry; makes this baked clump of wheat, the bread of life: indeed, a sacrament to behold.

The way his heart is lifted up with a feeling of gratitude. Overflowing with appreciation that this wheat, sown by a Ukrainian farmer dodging Russian bullets from North Korean scud missiles. This wheat reaped in the middle of the night and sent to the mills through the secret corridor of young conscripts assigned, despite war, to feed the world.

Filled with the Holy Spirit, these young soldiers ensure there is bread on every table, a sign of God nourishing his people with finest wheat.
