Friday March 7th: No one lives on bread alone

Fasting is more than a physical act; it expresses our longing for Jesus, sorrow for sin, and dependence on God.

Matthew 9:14-15

On this first Friday of Lent, our minds naturally turn to the practice of fasting, one of the pillars of this season. In today’s Gospel, Jesus says, “The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and on that day, they will fast.”
Lent recalls the events of Jesus’ suffering, passion, and death. It invites us to confront our sins, which create distance from the Lord, and to seek reconciliation, returning to Him with all our hearts.
Fasting is more than a physical act; it expresses our longing for Jesus, sorrow for sin, and dependence on God. It reminds us that “no one lives on bread alone.” By letting go of food, distractions, or comforts, we create space for God and sharpen our focus on what truly matters.
Let us fast with renewed purpose this Lent, with the intention of drawing closer to Jesus and preparing for the joy of His return. May it strengthen us to live the Gospel through love and service to others.
