The Archdiocesan Family Life Commission (AFLC) convened a meeting February 6 to explore how families can meaningfully participate in this Jubilee Year. Led by Episcopal Delegate Tricia Syms, the gathering emphasised faith’s transformative power in family life.
Participants shared testimonies of how faith guides families through life’s challenges. Many described faith as a beacon illuminating both everyday struggles and significant hardships. The discussion highlighted how community support enables families to rediscover God’s grace in their lives.
“Families can be pilgrims of hope,” noted one participant, referencing Romans 5:1-11, which speaks to finding hope in God’s love even amidst suffering. Stories of reconciliation after years of strained relationships demonstrated faith and forgiveness in action.
Family-centred initiatives
The AFLC outlined several programmes to support families on their faith journeys:
The Jubilee Family Prayer Door initiative was highlighted as a powerful symbol for encountering God and community, encouraging families to open their hearts to both.
The meeting discussed practical support for families approaching milestones like Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation. Mentor couples and marriage coaches will guide those preparing for marriage, with programmes like relationship workshops and date nights strengthening marital bonds.
Child safety remains paramount, with mandatory Virtus programme completion required for those working with children, ensuring safe environments throughout the faith community.
The Commission announced several Jubilee events, including a Eucharistic Congress on May 10, Pentecost Mass with Families on June 7, the International Marriage Encounter North American Convention June 20-22, and Jubilee Family fun sports day on July 19 —all designed to foster community and spiritual growth.
Leaders were encouraged to mobilise parish talent through surveys and mass announcements, with special emphasis on reaching out to families experiencing loss and parents of children in sacramental programmes.
As the Jubilee Year unfolds, the AFLC invites all families—regardless of background or circumstance—to participate in these initiatives. Whether as facilitators, mentors, or participants, there are abundant opportunities to experience God’s love and grace during this special year of celebration.
