Friday February 21st: A call to self-denial

Jesus’ challenge is difficult but possible.

Mark 8:34-9:1

We must hear Jesus’ words, in today’s gospel, as a personal challenge: “If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let them deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow me.” These words speak to the heart of Christian discipleship and call us to reflect deeply on our relationship with Christ and our commitment to our Christian vocation.

The requirements of discipleship are self-denial, carrying our cross, and following Jesus. In a world that often prioritizes self-fulfillment and personal ambition, Jesus calls us to self-denial. Self-denial is about reordering our lives so that God is at the center.

In taking up our cross we accept the sacrifices, struggles, and even persecutions that come with living and witnessing to our faith. It is a call to embrace the challenges of life with trust in God. And of course, following Jesus is about having a personal relationship with Him, walking in His footsteps, and imitating His love, humility, and obedience to the Father.
