“And his ears were opened, and at once the impediment of his tongue was loosened and he spoke clearly.”
Mark 7: 31-37
Jesus’ healing of the deaf man with a speech impediment is not only a story of physical healing but also a lesson on evangelization. Evangelization begins with listening. The man’s inability to hear symbolizes a deeper struggle: being closed off to the Word of God.
Equally important is the inability to speak clearly. The man’s speech impediment reflects the challenge of proclaiming the gospel. It’s not about being eloquent but about sharing the Good News with conviction and clarity.
For us, while we may not be physically deaf or have an impediment in our speech, we can experience spiritual deafness or a reluctance to speak when God calls us to witness. The noise of our busy lives or distractions may drown out God’s voice. Similarly, fear or complacency can silence us when opportunities arise to share our faith.
Jesus’ healing reminds us that He opens our ears to hear His Word and loosens our tongues to proclaim His truth, calling us to actively participate in His mission.
