CEBM seeks update on rebuilding of St Dominic’s Primary

The Catholic Education Board of Management (CEBM) is seeking an update from the Ministry of Education (MoE) regarding the plans for rebuilding the St Dominic’s RC School, Penal and the provision of an additional security guard for the Infants Department.

On Monday, February 10, parents of students in the Infants Department protested the deplorable conditions in which their children are housed after being relocated to the parish hall of St Dominic’s RC Church.

The issues highlighted by the parents were no security guard, no access to AC units, no play area for Infants, unsafe carpark, inadequate toilets, sharing of toilets with other persons using the church, disruption caused by church events during school hours and the need for a new school.

CEBM CEO Sharon Mangroo told The Catholic News parents said they will continue to keep their children home until their issues are addressed. “Further updates will be given as information comes to hand,” Mangroo said.

Parents have been protesting since the reopening of schools in the 2024 school term. Students have been occupying the parish hall and Penal Community Centre since February 2017. The relocation occurred after an earthquake in 2016 caused structural damage and land slippage. — KJ
