“Rest for a while”….
Mark 6:30-34
The Apostles, after ministry, came and told Jesus ‘all they had done and taught’. They were busy and available even at the expense of themselves. The passage said there were so many coming and going, they had no time even to eat. For those of us in ministry, this sounds so familiar.
Jesus, however, has the answer. He says to us that we ‘must come away to some lonely place all by [ourselves] and rest for a while’. We are to separate ourselves at times from our ministry. Jesus exhorts us to find our special place that rejuvenates us – a quiet place in our homes, our prayer altars and spaces, the beach, a river, a sunset. No-one can re-connect with Jesus for us. We have to come – just us and Him. We too, like in the creation story, must take time to rest – to truly be alone with Jesus, who breathes life into our lives, before we can recommit to ministry. After that process, we too will ‘set ourselves’ to continue in our ministry and ‘rejoin Jesus’.
