‘Take nothing for the journey except a staff ‘
Mark 6: 7 – 13
Jesus sent out his apostles in pairs and instructed them to take nothing for the journey except a staff. They were to preach repentance, cast out devils, anoint many sick people, and cure them.
At first glance, this seems to be what the priests are commissioned to do, for many of them have taken the vow of poverty. By their preaching and counselling, they help many into repentance and also help others who have numerous problems.
Jesus, however, wants all of us to follow him so we are to spread the good news and not let materialism hinder us. In this way, we will be able to help others with various ailments, physical and mental.
We can take example from people like St. Francis of Assisi, Saint Mother Teresa, Archbishop Anthony Pantin and those in parish ministries who devote their lives to helping others.
Lord, give me the courage to help my neighbours in their needs.
