Parents as Pilgrims of Hope

The Archdiocesan Family Life Commission (AFLC) hosted an Introduction to Parenting session for the parents of the St Philip and St James RC Church, Chaguanas, First Communion class on Sunday, January 12. Anchored by the scripture from Romans 5:3-5, the session invited parents to reflect on their role as Pilgrims of Hope amidst life’s challenges.

The session explored the “rough waters” that parents often navigate. These include criticism, financial difficulties, the complexities of raising teenagers, the challenges of becoming grandparents unexpectedly, and the pervasive influence of social media.

Parents also face struggles in instilling values, navigating various family perspectives, managing societal pressures, and addressing issues like communication breakdowns, violence in entertainment, and peer pressure. These difficulties are further compounded for single parents or families where both parents are not aligned in values.

Rooted in the theological virtues of faith, hope, and charity, the session inspired parents to see their journey not just as a series of challenges but as a vocation of love and resilience. By clinging to faith, nurturing hope, and practising charity within their families, parents were reminded that they are not alone in their mission.

The session concluded by encouraging parents to embody and practise the acts of mercy. These tangible expressions of love–feeding the hungry, comforting the sorrowful, and forgiving offences—are not just external acts but transformative ways of parenting with hope and grace.

The AFLC’s session was a powerful reminder that parenting is a pilgrimage, not a perfect journey. It is through the trials, supported by God’s grace, that parents become true witnesses of hope in their families and society.
