J’Lani De Four is on an inspiring journey to become a licensed psychologist. As he steps forward into this calling, he seeks the support of those who share his belief in the importance of mental health and human flourishing.
Having graduated with a bachelor’s degree with First Class Honours in Psychology from The University of the West Indies (UWI), his path has been filled with challenges, perseverance, and unwavering faith. Today, J’Lani embarks on a new chapter: pursuing his master’s in clinical and counselling psychology at Chestnut Hill College, a private Catholic college in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The 24-year-old’s journey has been marked by profound moments of reflection and resilience. After facing several rejections while applying for graduate programmes, including some international institutions in Europe, he found himself questioning his path. The process was discouraging, but it also revealed important lessons about patience, faith, and trust.
“The teacher doesn’t talk during the test,” he explains, drawing from a quote that reminded him that even in difficult times, God’s guidance remains steady. Despite moments of doubt, his determination led him to apply to Chestnut Hill College, where he was welcomed with open arms. “We want this young man here…We want him here” they told him. And with that affirmation, J’Lani’s faith in God’s plan was reinforced.
His passion for psychology is deeply connected to his faith and his sense of purpose. Reflecting on his role at Catholic Religious Education Development Institute (CREDI), where he serves as an administrative assistant to the general manager, J’Lani shares how his experience has helped him develop essential skills that will benefit his future career.
“It’s interesting because initially, I was like, how does psychology fit here? But it’s given me real work experience—helping me understand relationships and how people interact in a job setting,” he says. J’Lani sees the value in working closely with others, as relationships are fundamental to both his current role and his future work as a psychologist.
He also told The Catholic News one of his passions was to be a pilot. “But I asked myself ‘What is the impact I’m making?…’’What are the characteristics or the traits within myself that I see making a difference?….The only thing that spoke to me in that time was psychology.”
Throughout his journey, J’Lani has encountered moments of self-doubt, especially concerning finances. Growing up, he knew of the financial strain in pursuing higher education in the United States. Despite his efforts to explore affordable options, the high cost of education remains a challenge.
“It definitely humbles you. You can’t have any pride when you’re asking people for big bucks. But when I’m mentioning it to people, they say ‘J’Lani, you know what, you’re going to get through…people will support’.”
J’Lani’s faith and commitment to his goals continue to push him forward. He also credits his grandmother Eudora Lawrence, who would constantly ask: “Are you praying?”
“Faith has always been a part of me,” he says. He emphasised that he doesn’t see his role as compartmentalising his faith with his profession. Rather, he sees his deep connection to faith as providing him with a holistic perspective on mental health.
“You’re trying to invite them to something greater than themselves…. [that] there’s a divine master that’s there to help.”
Your support will help J’Lani achieve his dream of becoming a licensed psychologist. In his own words, “Pursuing this programme is not just an academic endeavour; it is a mission. I am reaching out for your support and aid in funding my education, enabling me to bring my vision to life. Your contribution will help me become a licensed psychologist, equipped to guide individuals toward wholeness.”
Contributions are essential to cover his tuition, fees, and living expenses while he studies in the United States over the next three years. Classes start in August.
“Our heavenly Father has begun this work in me; He will be sure to bring it to completion,” he said.
