Friday January 24th: Jesus as model

“He now went up onto the mountain and summoned those he wanted.”

Mark 3:13-19

Today’s gospel reminds us of three important aspects of Jesus’ life. The first is His prayer. The gospel opens with Jesus going up into the hills, a place of prayer. Out of His prayer He made significant decisions that impacted His life and everyone else’s. His prayer was both a personal consolation for Him and a period of discernment.

The second aspect is He appointed the twelve, who were to be His companions, first and foremost. Disciples must have a period of formation, a time of learning, a time of simply being with the Lord. Nothing can happen without this initial experience of sitting at the Lord’s feet to listen and to learn.

And the third is these twelve would then be sent out to preach and to heal. After disciples have spent time with the Lord, learned from Him and drew from Him, they must then share what they have gathered with others. The basic principle is this. Disciples do not receive for themselves only. They receive so that they can share.
