“… for He (Jesus) taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.”
Mark 1:21-28
In this Gospel, the word ‘authority’ is used twice and, both times, there was disbelief that Jesus could speak at this level; after all, He was just a carpenter’s son. However, we recall that at twelve, when found in the temple, “everyone who heard Him was amazed at his understanding and his answers.” (Luke 2:46-47)
The impure spirits that possessed the man recognised Jesus right away as the “Holy One of God,” and His power and authority to destroy them. How about us? Do we truly recognise Jesus in the Eucharist? Do we give Him authority over our fears and anxieties, over our future or the most troublesome areas in our lives, with the confidence that nothing is impossible with God? Do we believe more in the authority of politicians, doctors, spiritual leaders, and therapists, not realising that God is the source?
As Pilgrims of Hope in this Jubilee Year 2025, let us avail ourselves of the graces offered in Eucharistic Adoration and the Sacraments of Reconciliation, and Holy Communion. Lord, through them, help us to reflect on, and recognize your authority. Amen.
