Sunday January 12th: Speaking truth to power

We are not the Christ; we too are unfit to untie the strap of His sandals; but we can be Christlike.

Luke 3:15-16; 21-22

He brought such an expectant vibe to the community that people thought John might be the Christ. He put it right quickly, saying, ‘The One who comes after me, ranks before me. I am unfit to undo the straps of his sandals.’

They thought he was the Christ because he was acting Christlike. How come?

Is it because he was of the lineage? A great preacher?
Is it because he was mystical or visionary or radical and prophetic?

He was unmistakably a speaker of truth. Especially speaking truth to power, as he was intolerant of injustice. He called a spade a spade which brought a sword to his neck. Whistle blowers are a rare breed and essentially Christlike.

We are not the Christ; we too are unfit to untie the strap of His sandals; but we can be Christlike. It is not easy; our salvation depends on it. The world will be a better place if we discover the way in which we are called, earmarked, and blessed to be Christlike.

Go forth, choose your path carefully and with great faith become like the Christ.
