Friday January 3rd: Behold the Lamb of God

“I have seen, and I testify that he is the Chosen One of God.”

John 1:29-34

Today’s gospel proclaims a fundamental truth about Jesus, when John the Baptist says, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” With these words John invites us into the mystery of Christ’s mission and identity.

The title “Lamb of God” evokes a rich tapestry of biblical imagery. It is the Passover Lamb in Exodus 12. We see it in the image of the Suffering Servant in Isaiah 53. It is the sacrificial lamb in Leviticus. It culminates in Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross which takes away the sin of the world.

The priest repeats John’s words at the Eucharist: “Behold the Lamb of God,” as we approach to receive Holy Communion and we meet Jesus, the Lamb who gives Himself to us in love. By acknowledging Jesus as the Lamb of God, we are called to live as a redeemed people, avoiding sin and embracing love and mercy. Today’s passage makes us renew our commitment to behold the Lamb of God everyday, especially in the Eucharist.
