St Dominic’s Children’s Home brings the Nativity story to life once again

In true St Dominic’s Children’s Home tradition, the highly anticipated Nativity Play graced the stage from Friday, December 6 to Sunday 8, 2024. The performances brought a delightful mix of laughter, nostalgia, and heartfelt gratitude as the talented cast delivered a show that left audiences captivated.

Adding to the festive cheer, each intermission featured stellar performances from a variety of artists and groups, including the Holy Name Convent Parang Group, Marsha Woodley, Pierre De Coteau, Mr Trotman, Belmont Boys RC, Voces Jóvenes, and versatile saxophonist Pedro Lezama, a proud past resident of the Home.

This year, the Nativity scenes were made even more authentic with the inclusion of live animals. Goats, sheep, rabbits, a horse (standing in for the traditional donkey), and even a live baby brought the Christmas story to life in a way that was nothing short of magical.

The creative flair of each cast member infused the play with humour and originality, leaving audiences in stitches and yearning for more.

Notably, the event was graced by the presence of many Dominican Sisters, the founders of this cherished tradition. Their attendance underscored the historical and spiritual significance of the play, which continues to be a highlight of the Home’s cultural calendar.

Some of the feedback we received included the following:

  • “The show was captivating.”
  • One cast member shared that they now understand the role Herod played during the time of the Messiah.
  • A child in the audience observed, “The cast acting as people in Noah’s days were not listening to what the prophet was saying, and that is why they drowned.”
  • Several attendees mentioned that they only truly understood the history behind the birth of Jesus after experiencing this production.

A legacy of joy and reflection

The Nativity Play, a tradition initiated by the Dominican Sisters in the late 1800s, has now reached its 93rd year. Originally, it was performed solely by the children of the Home, offering a poignant retelling of the Christmas story.

Over time, the play evolved under the stewardship of dedicated individuals, such as past resident Courtney Rodney, who upheld its legacy for many years.

In 2012, Sr Aluna Abbott OP took the reins, breathing new life into the production by crafting her own script to ensure its continued vibrancy and relevance.

Recognising a decline in the number of resident performers, Sr Aluna expanded the cast to include the children of caregivers, staff grandchildren, and other young members of the community.

This move not only safeguarded the tradition but also enriched it, fostering intergenerational bonds and reinforcing the timeless message of the Nativity story.

As the curtain closed on another successful run of the play, the spirit of unity, joy, and faith was palpable, reminding all in attendance of the true essence of the Christmas season. Don’t miss our 94th production in 2026, God willing.
