“…and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them.”
Luke 2:16-21
Today we heard about the shepherds. Regular shepherds, out watching their flock when God sends his angels to bring them the good news of Jesus’ birth.
Shepherds were not commonly regarded as ideal witnesses given the marginal, nomadic nature of their lives. Yet we see them as among the first to announce Jesus who would later proclaim himself ‘shepherd’.
What was so special about these Shepherds you may ask. The fact that they were ordinary people, of course. In keeping with the humble beginnings of Jesus, King of Kings, coming to us in a manger the first visitors are also humble, regular people in the community. This fits in with God’s use of “ordinary” people to accomplish His will.
Today, I thank God for the blessing of another year, and I pray that God can use me, an ordinary person, to fulfill His will here on Earth.
Amen.
