Few school events at St Monica’s Preparatory thrill the pupils and staff as much as its annual Walkathon and Breakfast Morning. This year was no exception. In fact, led by its principal, Ann Marie Clarke, fully supported by her enthusiastic staff, St Monica’s reshaped this event, bringing its stakeholders together to make a timely statement: ‘We Need Peace – PLEASE STOP THE CRIME.’
In the weeks leading up to November 9, the school’s courtyard and classrooms were transformed into creative spaces where pupils excitedly discussed their ideas then put their artistic talents to work as they created the signs they would display on Walking the Path to Peace—our banner theme.
It was truly as if our Lord was in full support as the overcast morning allowed for a memorable walk. The walkathon, usually a competitive event among the school’s five Houses, became a unified procession.
Spirits high and positive energy flowing, families and friends, pupils past and present, members of staff and well-wishers all gathered early on that Saturday morning, displaying their handmade signs and placards.
Joined by two moko jumbies, much to the children’s delight, the procession made its way around the Queen’s Park Savannah, past a water station manned by staff and Theo the Lion, the school’s mascot, ending at the school’s compound on Dundonald Street.
Then it was on to a lively breakfast during which the participants partook of various delectable treats as well as the numerous stalls and games set up by the staff.
This event will not soon be forgotten, not only because many of the signs created by the pupils, can be found displayed around the school, but also because these pupils were able to exercise their right to voice their concerns. An opportunity that was not lost on even the youngest among them.
