On Tuesday, September 17, the Head Girls and Student Leaders of St Joseph’s Convent, Port of Spain; St Joseph’s Convent, St Joseph; Holy Faith Convent, Penal and Providence Girls’ Catholic School had the privilege of attending a luncheon and discussion with the Archbishop Charles Jason Gordon.
The group, which included Kimora Coward, Shekkina Melville, Jada-Marie Pierre, Ariana Marchan, Cindy-Ann Bigford, Bridgette Bellamy, Mayah Mohammed, and Anastacia Sambrano, gathered for an afternoon of insightful conversation on important topics affecting youth today.
A central topic of discussion was the sacredness of marriage. Archbishop Gordon emphasised the divine nature of marriage, encouraging us to value faithfulness and commitment in relationships.
We also reflected on the societal challenges surrounding divorce, particularly the loss of understanding about the true meaning of marriage and were reassured by our shared commitment to preserving the sanctity of marriage and intimacy.
We also discussed the role of social media and how it influences our values and beliefs. While we recognised the benefits of connecting with others online, Archbishop Gordon encouraged us to strengthen our minds with God’s teachings and resist the negative pressures that can come from social media.
He challenged us to take action in our schools by introducing ‘netiquette’ sessions to support peers who are vulnerable to these influences.
Another key topic was the importance of empathy and compassion, particularly toward the LGBTQIA+ community. Archbishop Gordon reminded us that as Catholics, we are called to love and show kindness to all, just as Christ loves us. We also reflected on the importance of standing firm in our beliefs, especially when facing challenges or pressures from the world around us.
Later in the discussion, we touched on some difficult topics, including the portrayal of sex and violence in the creative industries. Archbishop Gordon reminded us of the importance of treating our bodies with respect and dignity, emphasising that intimacy is meant to be shared within the sacred bond of marriage.
We also discussed the harmful impact of pornography, which diminishes the value of individuals and relationships.
Throughout this session, Archbishop Gordon fostered an open and respectful environment where we could share our thoughts and ask questions on a wide range of topics. His guidance and insights helped us feel empowered to carry forward the lessons learned and apply them in our roles as leaders in our communities.
As the event concluded, we felt inspired and grateful for the opportunity to engage with Archbishop Gordon. This experience has strengthened our commitment to living out our Catholic values and to showing love, understanding, and leadership in all aspects of our lives.
