Collaboratively written by students of Holy Faith Convent, Couva; St Joseph Convent, San Fernando; and Holy Name Convent, Port of Spain
On Monday, September 23, students from Holy Faith Convent, Couva; Holy Name Convent, Port of Spain; and St Joseph’s Convent, San Fernando had the unique opportunity to share a special afternoon with Archbishop Charles Jason Gordon at Archbishop’s House.
The event, filled with meaningful discussions and moments of reflection, allowed students to engage with the Archbishop on various matters. At first, it seemed like a normal question and answer segment, but soon after, it led to an open and honest conversation.
As we conversed over lunch, thought-provoking questions were raised, such as: Why are after school lessons necessary? Is religion on the decline? Are students being coerced into lesbian relationships within the school environment?
As well as other subjects relating to the patriarchy, romantic relationships, vocations, and criminality. Thus, various perspectives were entertained, allowing him to have a greater appreciation for the mindset of the younger generation while sharing his perspective.
Pertaining to romantic relationships, we discussed the roles of males and females, which eventually led to a conversation of the different changes both genders may face during the stage of puberty.
The Archbishop, known for his willingness to address even the most difficult topics, shared his thoughts on the importance of holding onto faith amidst challenges, while also encouraging us to be critical thinkers and reflective individuals.
He listened attentively to our perspectives, offering wisdom drawn from his youth and his many years of service to the Church and society. His candid approach, especially on topics often avoided, not only in religious circles but also in broader societal discussions, was refreshing and gave us deeper insight and understanding.
The afternoon, not only filled with enriching dialogue, was also a time for us to reflect on our roles as young people of faith in shaping the future of our spirituality and society.
The Archbishop reminded us that our generation must continue to question, seek clarity, and embrace compassion in a world where truth often feels subjective. As the meal ended, we left the Archbishop’s House not only with full stomachs but also with minds and hearts filled with much to ponder, discuss, and act upon in our journeys of faith.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Archbishop Gordon for his unwavering support and guidance. His leadership and dedication to our community continues to inspire us all, and we are grateful for the time and wisdom he shared with us.
May he continue to lead with grace and strength, knowing that everyone deeply appreciates his efforts. The experience has been a privilege that none of us will soon forget.
