“Jesus challenges our limited perspectives.”
Luke 20: 27-40
We humans tend to nitpick, belabouring the non-essentials of many situations. Charitably you call us ‘detail-oriented’; but mostly we are short-sighted and myopic. We focus on the trivial, looking for things to reinforce our pre-conceived notions.
The Sadducees in today’s Gospel were no different. Learned men of their time, tried to use their reason and intelligence to trap Jesus and cement their right to disbelieve in the resurrection. In response, Jesus challenges their limited perspectives, sharing a greater truth. The Kingdom is better than this world, and the children of the Kingdom are not concerned with such mundane things. They live in glory.
As the Sadducees’ superficiality is revealed, we get a glimpse of God’s mercy. These men were humbled, not humiliated. They were not rejected for being wrong; but were invited to go deeper in the truth. (Catholic.net)
That invitation is ours also. Let’s not stare too long at the molehills and miss the grandeur of the mountains.
