Friday November 22nd: The heart, a house of prayer

“According to scripture, my house shall be a house of prayer but you have turned it into a robber’s den.”

Luke 19: 45 – 48

Jesus drove the merchants out of the Temple because they turned this House of Prayer into a robbers’ den. Jesus’ action makes us reflect on how we treat God’s House and our relationship with Him.

The temple is central to the Jewish people as the Church is central to Christians. Yet, it became corrupted, overshadowing true prayer and worship. The issue was not buying and selling, it was losing focus on communion with God.

We may not physically turn the Church into a marketplace, but our hearts can be distracted when we enter for prayer and worship. Like the merchants in the temple, we can become self absorbed, forgetting that we come before God to pray, listen, and offer ourselves in love.

Jesus calls us to reclaim the sacredness of God’s House and our relationship with Him. True prayer is the heart of this relationship. Our hearts, like the temple, are meant to be houses of prayer. But we often allow the ‘noise’ of the world to push God aside.
