Saturday November 16th: Justice

“I’ll rise up. I’ll rise unafraid.”

Luke 18: 1-8

Had this widow heard the song “I’ll Rise Up” by Andra Day, she would have identified with the singer and her intention to rise above every obstacle in her path. Further, the singer is not rising alone. She speaks for each of us who encounter trials and tribulations in our lives.
In the parable, Jesus speaks of this widow who, in that society, was supposed to be voiceless and personless, yet found the courage to challenge the judge to do what he was supposed to do, that is, deal out justice. She was not daunted by his refusal to do just that. Her persistence and her passion for a just cause propelled her to not give up hope.
Jesus challenges each of us, to adopt the attitude of the widow; to not give up our passion for justice in our homes, our schools, our places of work, our country, and our world. In so doing we will “rise unafraid” together and do it “a thousand times again.”
