– Archbishop at Mass for altar servers
Archbishop Charles Jason Gordon urged altar servers to embrace a daily sacrifice, emphasised the importance of showing love wherever it is needed, offer help wherever possible, and make a difference in the lives of others.
The Archbishop was the chief celebrant and homilist at the annual Thanksgiving Mass for altar servers hosted by the Archdiocese of Port of Spain Altar Servers Council. It was held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception last Sunday.
In his homily, Archbishop Gordon stated that being an altar server is special “because you are at the closest to God when the priest transforms bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit”.
He urged altar servers to identify with the Gospel of the day (Mk 12:38–44) and give freely and generously to God. Like the woman who only gave two coins, it was all she had, and it was the most pleasing to God, he said.
Archdiocesan Vocations director Fr Kenwyn Sylvester stated that both him and Fr Kwesi Alleyne, who were among the concelebrating clergy, started as altar servers before their call to the priesthood. He advised the young men and women if they “feel a tug in your heart” for the religious life or the priesthood they could call the hotline to start the process of discernment.
The Archbishop affirmed that the Altar Servers Council is currently being revamped led by Fr Alleyne, following consultations from several head servers across the Archdiocese. Giving the vote of thanks, La Brea parish altar server Paul Phillip thanked Archbishop Gordon, Cathedral Administrator Fr Martin Sirju (in absentia), Cathedral staff, clergy of the Archdiocese, the Liturgical Commission, the Youth Commission, parents, senior altar servers for their training, and the youth choir of Our Lady of Fatima, Curepe which led the music ministry.
He also thanked fellow altar servers. “Your dedication, discipline, and reverence in serving at the altar are truly inspiring. You bring honour and grace to the liturgy, and your commitment allows us to celebrate the Mass with dignity and joy. Remember to always be generous with your service to the altar. May you continue to grow in faith and devotion as you serve God’s people.” He ended, “Let us strive to always put God first, and remember to give a daily sacrifice.”
