Bethesda, a community dedicated to Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), is expanding its services to more areas across Trinidad and Tobago. This growth reflects Bethesda’s deep commitment to fostering inclusive and supportive spaces for all, regardless of physical or cognitive abilities.
Through sensory-friendly Masses, Bethesda provides a welcoming environment tailored to individuals with varying disabilities, featuring simplified rituals, soft music, and limited use of microphones.
The first Bethesda Mass took place in 2015 at the Archbishop’s House in Port of Spain. Now, nearly a decade later, Bethesda has come full circle, with monthly Masses returning to Port of Spain in 2024. The expansion marks a significant milestone in Bethesda’s journey, from its humble beginnings to becoming a vital support system for families with PwDs.
From August, sensory-friendly Masses have been held monthly at three locations: Holy Trinity Arouca RC Pastoral Centre (every second Sunday), St Paul’s RC in Couva (every third Sunday), and St Francis RC, Belmont (every fourth Sunday).
The inaugural Mass at St Francis was celebrated by Fr Mikkel Trestrail on August 25. Fr Trestrail and his parish community in Belmont played a crucial role in providing the space for Bethesda’s expansion, welcoming them with open arms and creating a space of inclusion.
Bethesda’s growing presence speaks to the increasing demand for inclusive religious services, offering hope, unity, and faith to families across the country. As the community continues to expand, Bethesda ensures that everyone—regardless of their disabilities—feels embraced by the Church, embodying the belief that we are all children of God.
With ongoing plans to reach even more communities, Bethesda is demonstrating that inclusivity is more than just an idea; it is a mission that brings people together in faith and love.— Vanae Alexander, POS Mass Coordinator
