“…but as for seats at my right hand or my left, these are not mine to grant” …
Mark 10:35-45
In today’s Gospel, we read of James and John, who in trying to play the nepotism card, want positions of power and glory at Jesus’ side. Jesus tells them both that they do not know what they are asking, and Jesus is correct because as an article of our faith teaches, Jesus Himself is seated at the Father’s right hand, interceding for us all, engaging in an important and continuous role for our salvation.
With Jesus at the Father’s right hand, where would James and John sit? Would they have the Father removed from his rightful position to gain those coveted seats? Jesus has done the greatest favour for us by gifting us our salvation through the glory of His Cross. And he invites us to share in his life by patterning ourselves after Him in His death.
Let us follow him, giving our lives to others in complete love and service. This is the only way to have real power, authority, influence, and glory. And it is definitely the only way we could get closest to Jesus or the Father.
