Saturday October 12th: Responding with trust and obedience

‘Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it’

Luke 11:27-28

In this brief exchange with the woman in the crowd, Jesus shifts the focus from biological relationships to spiritual ones. While it was a common belief at the time to emphasize the special role of a mother, especially in the context of Jesus’ remarkable ministry, Jesus directs attention to something deeper: the true source of blessedness is not simply in physical connection but in spiritual obedience.

In fact, the mother who gave birth and nursed Jesus is indeed blessed. But this is because she ‘heard the word of God and obeyed it’ by saying yes to the Angel Gabriel.

As we reflect on this passage, let’s ask ourselves: How are we hearing God’s Word today? Hearing God’s Word requires intentionality—through prayer, reading Scripture, and reflecting on its meaning for our lives.

And hearing the word of God, we respond to it with trust and obedience like Mary, deepening our sense of blessedness, not through worldly success, but through our spiritual relationship with God!
