Sunday September 29th: Not one of us

“No one who does a mighty work in my name will be able soon after to speak evil of me.”

Mark 9:38-43; 45; 47-48

There is so much good in this world, but like the disciples in today’s Gospel, we miss it sometimes because those who do it may not be “one of us.” They may be of a different background, we may not share the same affiliation, faith, or persuasion so what is done is viewed with suspicion. Instead of accepting it as part of God’s plan in establishing His reign we reject it and question their motives.
God’s grace is operative through all and when partiality is demonstrated based on our perception of the other, we make ourselves bigger than God thinking that we have a monopoly on His favour.
Let us stop today and consider the good that is being done in the most unlikely places by the most unlikely persons. Is it not a testament of the love and mercy of an “all-inclusive” God? Does it not inspire hope that all is not lost, and God is at work everywhere if only we have the eyes to see it and the wisdom to perceive it?
