DOMINICA
River enthusiasts in Dominica joined millions of advocates from over 100 countries to observe World Rivers Day 2024 on September 22, under the theme Waterways for a Sustainable Future.
World Rivers Day, celebrated annually on the fourth Sunday of September, brings attention to the critical role rivers play in the environment. The event encourages public awareness and improved stewardship of rivers worldwide. This year’s theme underscores the necessity of sustainable practices to protect waterways for future generations.
This global event emphasises the critical role of rivers in sustaining ecosystems, supporting wildlife, and fostering agricultural and human communities.
Mimosa Pigra, listed among the 100 worst invasive species globally, has impacted rivers and watersheds across Dominica. This invasive plant species was reportedly introduced to the island through equipment used for river dredging after Hurricane Maria.
The presence of Mimosa Pigra poses a significant threat to the local environment, potentially disrupting water flow and affecting biodiversity. Mimosa Pigra’s dense growth can clog waterways, reducing their capacity to carry water. This can increase the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall.
According to CaribDaily.News, World Rivers Day Committee Chair, Fr Franklyn Cuffy CSsR, issued an appeal for collective efforts to eradicate Mimosa Pigra from communities. He believed the invasive species’ proliferation could undermine Dominica’s reputation as ‘The Nature Isle’, known for its 365 rivers. The committee said there was a need for immediate action to preserve the island’s natural heritage.
