I was sitting in church last weekend listening to the homily. For some reason as our parish priest spoke my mind zoned in on one portion of what he was saying. “God loved us so much that He sent His only begotten son so that He may die to forgive us of our sins.” A statement I have heard maybe thousands of times, yet it was looping in my mind endlessly.
“Why did God want me to meditate on the words that I have heard countless times?” I pondered. My eyes then strayed to a young child who was happily smiling and bouncing on the lap of her mother. Her mother’s gaze was very loving, and I thought about the love that a parent has for a child. I then wondered what it would be like to see things from God’s perspective. The next thing you know I was jotting down notes for this article.
I cannot fully fathom the omnipresence of our all-knowing and all-seeing God to even begin to fully grasp His perspective but thinking about it drove home how much love He has for each of us.
Just imagine you have a child who you love dearly. You want the best for this child. You nurture this child, and you are constantly presenting positive paths for your child to follow.
Sometimes your child follows them and sometimes your child strays. Sometimes your child acts out in ways against you to their own detriment, yet you still love them. You love them no matter what they do, and while you always present the right paths to them, you always allow them free will. No matter how much they go against you, you always choose them. That was a small fraction of what I could imagine from the perspective of God.
He loves every one of us so much that every moment He chooses us. He gives us opportunities to follow Him and do good. He puts challenges in our paths to help us grow. He loves us even though we continually do wrong. He loves us in our imperfect form and no matter what we do He will never leave us.
I don’t know about you, but that love sounds intense. If I were to imagine trying to help someone and they cursed me, I would find it very easy to throw my hands up and give up on that person. Yet God is always there for us.
When I think of His perspective, it makes me feel guilty. Guilty for the many moments where I sinned and not just sinned but prayed for forgiveness knowing I would do the same sin again.
I challenge you for a moment to take God’s point of view and look at how He may view you. He marvels and celebrates when you follow His path, when you communicate with Him through prayer, join Him during Holy Mass, etc.
Think about how disappointed He is when you stray into sin. Think about how He grants you forgiveness when you ask and still chooses you by providing you with opportunities to follow His will.
There is an unfathomable level of love where He sent His only son to die so that you and I may live. I know we hear about God’s immense love very often, but I think we must take a moment to internalise the level of love He presents in these acts.
Taking God’s viewpoint for that moment should bring a level of realignment to your life. God is cheering for us and is overflowing with love for us. Like a parent wanting the best for their child, how can we let Him down?
The next time you feel yourself straying from your path, view yourself through the point of view of God. Think about all that He wants for you and how much He loves you. Ask yourself if it is worth straying off the path He has set for you. I would like to think this would help you stay true to the path God has set for you.
