Saturday September 21st: Unwavering love

St Matthew, Apostle, Evangelist

“I desire mercy, not sacrifice… I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.”

Matthew 9: 9-13

“The Church is a hospital for sinners, not a museum for saints.” (Unknown). Today, as we celebrate the Feast of St. Matthew, we are reminded of this as Jesus points out that he did not come to call the righteous.

Matthew was a tax collector, and in Jesus’ time, they were the scum of society. Yet Jesus called Matthew to be one of his disciples. Jesus reveals to us a God for whom, mercy shown to others is greater than the sacrifices we may offer. He also shows us a God who breaks barriers to seek and save – a God who seeks out sinners more than the virtuous.

The feast reminds us that God always wants to enter our lives because he loves sinners. The sinners are we. We celebrate today, the unwavering love of God. May we respond to God’s call on our lives with the same openness to repentance and conversion as this great saint. May we also invite Jesus into our homes.
